History and description
Built in 1442 to replace a previous bridge, the Devil’s Bridge is a stone structure crossing the Natisone River, about 22 meters long and characterized by two arches, a central pier, and a perfect view over the river. Its history is inseparably tied to the popular legend that gave it its name: during its construction, the people of Cividale asked the devil for help, who in return demanded the soul of the first to cross it. However, despite the agreement, the inhabitants allowed an animal to cross first, thus tricking the devil himself.
Curiosities
The bridge is considered one of the most iconic symbols of Friuli, and nearby there is a statue representing the devil, commemorating the legend.
Access
As a bridge, it is freely accessible at any time of day, though care should be taken with strollers, wheelchairs, or bicycles due to its characteristic local stone surface.
How to reach it
Located in the very historic center of Cividale, the bridge can be reached by car from Udine via the A23 motorway, by train (getting off at Cividale station), by bus with various local lines, or on foot while fully enjoying the surrounding town.
Wrapped in legend and mystery, just like the rest of the Friulian village, the Devil’s Bridge is the perfect place to immerse yourself in Friulian folk culture!
