Ponso: Venetic-inscribed stones and temple structures emerge during SR10 excavations

Works for the new Regional Road SR10 (“Padana Inferiore”) in Ponso uncovered important archaeological evidence: carved stone markers with Venetic and Latin inscriptions and extensive foundation-level structures interpreted as cult buildings.

  • Findings: inscribed stone blocks (some bearing inscriptions on three faces) and structural remains at foundation level.
  • Suggested chronology: inscriptions dated to the 5th–4th centuries BCE; some features indicate reuse and modifications up to the 1st century CE.
  • Architectural notes: among the discoveries is a building showing traits of a peripteral temple, i.e., surrounded by a colonnade.

Several pieces appear to have been reused within a paved surface whose function remains uncertain, while other elements were found in their original positions. Initial evidence points to a site frequented since the pre-Roman period and likely used into Roman times, with progressive transformations rather than abandonment.

Investigation status: excavations are ongoing and the finds are under examination by the Superintendency for Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape responsible for the provinces of Padova, Treviso and Belluno. Further fieldwork will clarify site layout and occupation phases.

Practical information: the area is currently an active excavation/construction zone and is not safe for public access. For news about future openings, guided visits or official releases, check updates from the Superintendency and the Municipality of Ponso.
