Pompeii, Porta Stabia necropolis: the discovery

Excavations at the Porta Stabia necropolis, located just outside the ancient city walls of Pompeii, have brought to light the remains of two people connected to the 79 AD eruption. Researchers used artificial intelligence techniques to build a digital reconstruction of the scene and better understand the escape attempts.

Discovery details

Finds and associated evidence point to different moments of the eruptive event and to signs of defensive behaviour.

  • Location: Porta Stabia necropolis, Pompeii (NA), Italy.
  • Associated finds: a terracotta mortar used as head protection (with fracture marks), a ceramic oil lamp, an iron ring and ten bronze coins.
  • Observations on the remains: the two individuals appear to have died in different phases of the eruption: one likely overwhelmed by a pyroclastic flow, the other affected earlier, probably by a rain of lapilli.

Method: the role of artificial intelligence

AI software and photographic processing techniques were applied to produce a digital model of the context. These tools complement archaeologists' analyses by integrating data and visualising complex scenarios, aiding interpretation and public communication.

Implications for protection and outreach

AI-based digital reconstructions can assist research, conservation and visitor engagement by creating more accessible and immersive narratives of the past, provided they are developed and overseen by multidisciplinary teams including archaeologists and heritage specialists.

Practical note

This discovery is part of ongoing excavations and will be subject to further specialist study. For official updates on site openings, visits and announcements, consult the institutional channels of the Pompeii Archaeological Park.
