The Galleria d’Arte Moderna in Milan hosts a monographic exhibition devoted to Paul Troubetzkoy, a key sculptor at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The show highlights his ability to capture movement and character, favoring overall impression over painstaking detail.
The selection brings together portrait busts and animalier works, presented alongside paintings by European contemporaries to reconstruct the artistic atmosphere of the Belle Époque and the international context in which Troubetzkoy worked.
Born into a family of Russian and American origins, Troubetzkoy trained and worked across Milan, Moscow, Paris and the United States. His cosmopolitan experience shaped a sculptural language marked by naturalistic sensitivity and an emphasis on the energy and gesture often described as "impressionist sculpture."
The show develops two main thematic strands:
The exhibition is a co-production with international partners and includes visual dialogues with paintings by contemporaries. The accompanying catalogue expands on the idea of "impressionist sculpture," encouraging visitors to read the works as emotional, relational snapshots.
The exhibition programme includes talks and conferences, notably a lecture in Italian organized with the Institut français on Troubetzkoy’s ties to France. Some events are free subject to seat availability; discounted entry may be offered to cardholders of partner cultural organisations.
