Easter travel to Calabria becomes a luxury: concerns over rising transport costs

As the Easter holidays approach, concerns are growing about the cost of getting to Calabria. CONFAPI Turismo e Cultura Calabria has warned of widespread increases across transport modes, with fares rising sharply in the days before the holiday: trains, flights and fuel costs are making it harder for people to plan trips home.

Consumer observatories report substantial increases in some cases: train fares have been observed to rise by up to +47% compared with ordinary periods, and certain routes to Calabria show price spikes that can exceed 100% during peak demand.

  • Social impact: students and workers away from home may have to cancel trips or face unexpected expenses.
  • Impact on regional tourism: if reaching a destination becomes expensive, visits and business opportunities decline.
  • Price volatility: high fluctuations create uncertainty and planning difficulties.

In response, CONFAPI calls for greater transparency and monitoring tools to prevent speculative practices during high-demand periods. Proposed measures include oversight of pricing policies, incentives for off-peak travel, and targeted support for those needing to return home.

  • Continuous price monitoring during holiday periods;
  • clearer mechanisms for fare setting;
  • incentives and offers for travel outside peak days to support accessible mobility.

For Calabria, where cultural heritage and tourism are key assets, accessible mobility during holidays is essential: ensuring people can travel home without disproportionate costs protects family ties, the local economy and citizens' right to visit their region.
