Easter 2026 in Sicily: ancient religious rites still practiced in Prizzi, Adrano and Messina

Alongside liturgical celebrations, Easter brings a rich heritage of popular rites to Sicilian towns. These events, some with medieval roots, combine devotion, folklore and theatrical representation, offering insight into local cultural identity.

  • Prizzi — U ballu di diavuli: held on Easter Sunday, this event stages a confrontation between two groups — the devils accompanied by Death and the angels representing Life. The procession culminates in the meeting of the statues of Christ and the Madonna, when the ringing of bells marks the triumph of good. The ritual preserves medieval elements and attracts both locals and visitors.
  • Adrano — Diavolata and Angelicata: in Piazza Umberto the Diavolata is followed by the Angelicata, dramatizing the struggle between sin and salvation. The intervention of the archangel Michael signals the transition from an infernal scene to a heavenly one. Local performers, often from families who pass the tradition down generations, take part.
  • Messina — Festa degli Spampanati: characteristic of the city, the festival features the procession of the Risen Christ and the Madonna della Mercede in a search that ends with the so-called "giunta" (reunion). The day typically begins with Mass, followed by the procession and the meeting of the statues in Piazza Duomo; recent years have seen municipal measures to ensure event safety.

These celebrations highlight the role of tradition in Sicilian communal life. Visitors planning to attend should check official local sources for updated information and respect the sacred spaces and participants to help preserve the events' cultural and religious significance.
