Parthenope at the MANN: the mermaid that shapes Naples' identity

From myth to city: The National Archaeological Museum of Naples presents an exhibition exploring the figure of Parthenope across centuries of history, visual culture and social meaning. The show combines archaeological finds, artworks and contemporary proposals to illustrate how the myth has helped shape Naples’ identity.

Highlights

  • More than 250 works spanning from ancient Greek origins to contemporary interpretations.
  • Previously unpublished finds from recent excavations and selected private collections, integrated into a layered historical narrative.
  • Loans from over forty museums across Italy, Europe and the United States, coordinated by a multidisciplinary scientific committee.
  • An investigation of the siren’s changing iconography: from a half-woman/half-bird creature to the familiar fishtail image.
  • Contemporary contributions including audiovisual pieces and sound projects that enter into dialogue with the ancient material.
  • Site-specific work by Francisco Bosoletti in the museum atrium, realized as a visible, evolving installation from 24 March.

Practical information

Dates: 3 April - 6 July 2026. Opening hours: 9:00 - 19:30 (closed Tuesdays). Admission: included in the museum ticket, no additional fee for the exhibition.

Why go

This exhibition goes beyond objects in showcases: it connects myth and urban history to reveal how Parthenope has influenced local imagination and artistic practice. Seeing ancient masterpieces alongside modern reinterpretations offers a renewed perspective on the myth’s relevance today.
