Pantheon: practical guide to visiting Rome’s monument

Autore: Redazione 10/03/2026 14:45

Why visit the Pantheon

The Pantheon is one of the best-preserved monuments of ancient Rome and a masterpiece of engineering and art. Standing beneath its dome offers a unique experience that blends architecture, history and spiritual atmosphere—an essential stop in the historic center.

Quick history

The original building was commissioned by Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa in the 1st century BC, but the present structure dates to Emperor Hadrian’s reconstruction in the 2nd century AD. Converted into a church in the 7th century, the Pantheon’s new function helped preserve it remarkably well.

Location

The Pantheon sits on Piazza della Rotonda, right in central Rome. Its central position makes it easy to reach on foot from major landmarks such as Piazza Navona, the Trevi Fountain, Campo de’ Fiori and the Spanish Steps.

How to get there

  • On foot: the best option if you are exploring the historic center; pedestrian streets enhance the experience.
  • By bus: several lines stop nearby (e.g. Argentina, Corso Rinascimento); both stops are a short walk away.
  • By metro: the closest stations are Barberini and Spagna, about 10–15 minutes on foot.

Tickets and opening times

Since paid entry was introduced for most visitors, booking in advance is advisable, especially during the high season.

  • Typical prices: full ticket around €5; reduced for EU residents aged 18–25 around €3; free entry for under 18s and during religious services.
  • Where to buy: online via the official site, at ticket machines on site or at authorized ticket offices.
  • Typical opening hours: generally 9:00–19:00 (last admission around 18:30) Monday–Saturday; slightly reduced hours on Sundays. Check ahead for holiday or liturgical changes.

What to see inside

Although the interior plan is compact, the Pantheon contains remarkable features:

  • The dome: a concrete dome without reinforcement, with diameter equal to the interior height—a stunning example of Roman engineering.
  • The oculus: the central aperture (about 9 m) that illuminates the space and produces dramatic light effects; rainwater is managed by a hidden drainage system.
  • Funerary monuments: notable burials include the painter Raphael and Italian kings, adding artistic and historical depth to the site.

Visit length

Most visits take between 20 and 40 minutes; visitors interested in architecture or photography may stay longer to explore details and atmosphere.

Practical tips

  • Arrive early: mornings and shortly before closing are usually less crowded.
  • Dress appropriately: as an active place of worship, modest attire is required (covered shoulders, suitable lengths).
  • Combine visits: its central location makes it easy to include other nearby landmarks in your itinerary.
  • Buy tickets online: recommended in peak season to avoid queues.

Visiting the Pantheon means encountering a rare survivor of antiquity whose technical brilliance and historical resonance continue to inspire. Whether it’s your first time in Rome or a return visit, the monument remains an essential experience.
