History and description
Built starting in 1299 to a design by Arnolfo di Cambio, the palace was originally intended as the seat of the Florentine Republic. In the 16th century, however, it became part of the properties of Cosimo I de’ Medici who, after moving to Palazzo Pitti, gave it the name “Palazzo Vecchio” (“Old Palace”). Externally, it is characterized by a fortified appearance with a stone façade decorated with coats of arms and shields, and by the Torre di Arnolfo. Inside, highlights include the Salone dei Cinquecento, frescoed by Giorgio Vasari, the Studiolo of Francesco I, the monumental quarters, and the walkway along the tower.
Curiosities
Known for its many secret rooms and architectural elements with political symbolism, the palace is also famous for the Salone dei Cinquecento, where a lost fresco by Leonardo da Vinci is believed to be hidden behind a wall.
Access
Open year‑round from 9:00 am to 7:00 pm, Palazzo Vecchio can be visited together with its museum at a cost of €12–15, with free entry and specific reductions available.
How to reach it
Located in Piazza della Signoria, the palace is easily accessible on foot, as it lies in the very heart of Florence’s historic center. It can also be reached by train from Santa Maria Novella station, by several urban bus lines, or by car, parking in nearby areas.
A symbol of the city since the Middle Ages, Palazzo Vecchio is one of Florence’s most important monuments and an unmissable stop for anyone exploring the city.
