Palazzo Te – a Mannerist villa expressing the power of the Gonzaga family

Autore: Redazione 03/10/2025 09:53

History and description

Built between 1524 and 1534, Palazzo Te was designed by Giulio Romano for Federico II Gonzaga, Marquis of Mantua, as a place dedicated to leisure, receptions, and princely idleness. Located on the former “Isola del Teieto” (later shortened to Te), surrounded by the lakes around Mantua, the villa lies outside the city walls and is characterized by a square plan with a large central courtyard and four entrances, one on each side.

The building is raised on a noble floor above ground level, a measure also intended to protect it from floods of the nearby Mincio River. Its exterior façades are in rusticated stone, with pilasters and large openings, and a variety of ornamental details reflecting the Mannerist spirit. Inside, the villa is richly decorated with loggias, halls, and courtyards adorned with stuccoes and frescoes. Among the most famous are the Sala dei Giganti (Hall of the Giants), where the walls and ceiling narrate the myth of the gods’ rebellion against the giants; the Sala dei Cavalli (Hall of the Horses), with portraits and illusionistic decorations; and the Camera di Amore e Psiche (Chamber of Cupid and Psyche), which blends mythological sensuality with refined decoration.

Since 1990, the building has housed the Civic Museum and the International Center for Art and Culture of Palazzo Te, which organizes exhibitions of architecture as well as ancient and modern art.

Curiosities

In 1630, during the War of the Mantuan Succession, the palace was looted by imperial troops. Many frescoes and furnishings were damaged, and the building remained semi‑abandoned for a period.

Access

Open from Tuesday to Sunday, from 9:00 am to 7:30 pm, the palace can be visited with an admission fee of €15, with free entry and specific reductions available.

How to reach it

Located at Viale Te 13, the building can be reached by car via the Mantova Nord or Sud motorway exits, by various bus lines, on foot from Piazza Sordello and the historic center, or by a dedicated shuttle service.

An expression of the power and taste of the Gonzaga family, Palazzo Te is one of the most beautiful buildings in Mantua and an unmissable stop for visitors.
