Royal Palace – one of the most important historical and cultural symbols of Milan

Autore: Redazione 25/09/2025 17:05

History and description

Founded in the 12th century as the seat of the city government, built on the earlier Broletto Vecchio (the first known seat of civic authority), the Royal Palace later became a residential residence under the Visconti family. The building, in Neoclassical style, is characterized by an Honor Courtyard and numerous historic rooms, including the Hall of the Caryatids—built on the site of the old theater destroyed by fire in 1776—and the Royal Apartments. It later passed to the Sforza family, who expanded and enriched it, then to the Spanish and Austrian rulers, and finally to Napoleon Bonaparte. Eventually, it became the property of the House of Savoy, who used it as a royal residence during their visits to Milan. Damaged by bombings during World War II, the palace underwent several restorations and, although many interiors were lost, it is still open to visitors today. Moreover, it serves as a true cultural hub in the heart of the city, coordinated with three other exhibition venues: the Rotonda della Besana, the Palazzo della Ragione, and the Palazzo dell’Arengario.

Curiosities

In addition to being an important historical landmark, the palace has revealed mosaic floors in some of its rooms and regularly hosts major contemporary art exhibitions. Over the years, it has displayed works by renowned artists such as Caravaggio, Van Gogh, and Monet.

Access

Entry times and ticket prices vary depending on the exhibitions on display. The standard cost is usually between €15 and €18, with free admission and specific reductions available.

How to reach it

Located in Piazza del Duomo, the palace is easily accessible by metro (lines M1 or M3, Duomo stop), by bus or tram (lines 2 or 12), and on foot.

A monument that once embodied the power of Milan’s rulers, visiting the Royal Palace today offers a complete cultural experience, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the beauty of courtly life.
