Royal Palace – one of the most important monuments of Naples

Autore: Redazione 01/10/2025 23:37

History and description

The Royal Palace of Naples was built starting in 1600 at the request of Philip III of Spain, who wanted an official residence for the Spanish viceroys, symbolizing power in the Kingdom of Naples. Designed by Domenico Fontana, the monumental building overlooks the vast Piazza del Plebiscito, one of the city’s beating hearts. Its imposing and refined façade combines Baroque and Neoclassical elements, with large balconies adorned with wrought‑iron railings, numerous windows framed with decorative details, and a grand entrance portal. The rectangular inner courtyard is surrounded by loggias supported by columns, offering a bright and airy space, as well as access to the gardens—an oasis of greenery in the city center. The interiors are richly decorated, including the Hall of Mirrors, with its wide reflective surfaces and gilded stuccoes, the Throne Room, frescoed by renowned artists, and the Court Theatre, one of the oldest still active in Italy. The palace also houses the prestigious National Library of Naples, one of the most important in the country, preserving over 1.5 million volumes, thousands of rare manuscripts, and historical documents fundamental to the study of Italian and European culture.

Curiosities

The Royal Palace was one of the first buildings in Europe to be equipped with a central heating system, installed during the reign of Ferdinand II of Bourbon in the 19th century.

Access

Open to the public every day except Tuesday, from 9:00 am to 7:00 pm, the palace can be visited with an admission ticket of €12, with free entry and specific reductions available.

How to reach it

Located in the heart of Naples, the building can be reached by car via the A3 motorway towards Naples Centro, with paid parking available nearby; by bus (lines 140 or R4); by metro (line 1, Toledo or Municipio stops); or on foot, strolling through the historic center.

The Royal Palace of Naples is an essential stop for anyone wishing to immerse themselves in Neapolitan history and art, a true witness to the cultural richness and power that have shaped the city over the centuries.
