On Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 March Palazzo Lombardo, the historic building on Piazza d’Italia in Sassari, will be open to the public for the FAI Spring Days. Admission is by voluntary contribution. This is a chance to explore the recent restoration and the building’s renewed civic function.
Built around 150 years ago, Palazzo Lombardo underwent an extensive restoration completed in 2024 that returned architectural value and public use to a building long at risk of decline. Restoration works included façade repairs, roof renewal, window conservation, plaster recovery and full system upgrades, carried out with local craftsmen.
During the restoration, decorative painted vaults re-emerged in the noble floors — floral motifs, landscapes and allegorical scenes dating to the late 19th and early 20th centuries. These discoveries enrich the visit and highlight historic decorative links with neighbouring monumental buildings.
The reopening demonstrates how conservation and adaptive reuse can preserve a historic building’s identity while giving it a contemporary role: today Palazzo Lombardo hosts offices, representative spaces and professional firms active at local and international level.
For the latest program details and booking information, consult the FAI website or contact the Sassari FAI Delegation. Visiting supports heritage protection and reveals often-hidden city treasures.
