Palazzo Lanfranchi – a Baroque architecture in Matera

Autore: Redazione 02/10/2025 09:23

History and description

In the heart of Matera’s historic center stands Palazzo Lanfranchi, one of the most significant examples of Baroque architecture in the city. Built between 1668 and 1672 at the will of Bishop Vincenzo Lanfranchi and designed by the Capuchin friar Francesco da Copertino, it was originally intended to house the diocesan seminary. The building develops over two floors around a central cloister and is characterized by an asymmetrical façade, horizontally divided by a cornice. The lower part features five niches with statues of saints and the Madonna del Carmine, while the upper part is marked by vertical pilasters with capitals, blind arches, and a central rose window, crowned by a pediment with a clock. Over the centuries, the palace underwent several transformations and even hosted the poet Giovanni Pascoli during his early teaching years. Since 2003, it has housed the National Museum of Medieval and Modern Art of Basilicata, which displays a vast collection of sacred art, Neapolitan school paintings from the 17th and 18th centuries, and a significant selection of works by the artist Carlo Levi.
