History and description
Built between 1874 and 1876 on a design by Gherardo Rege, on the remains of the Celestine convent, the palace also incorporates the Church of Santa Maria della Libera. The building features a tripartite façade with pillars and a clock bearing the inscription “municipio,” two floors—the first with a balcony supported by marble Ionic columns—and a glass rear section on three levels. Outside, there is also a statue of Saint George on horseback, depicted slaying a dragon.
Curiosities
The clock on the façade is equipped with small bells whose melody, played at intervals of a few minutes, can only be heard in its entirety when the hour strikes.
Access
As the seat of the town hall, the building is freely accessible from Monday to Friday, between 9:00 am and 5:30 pm.
How to reach it
Located in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II, the palace can be reached by metro or bus from the city center, as well as on foot.
An elegant building and a fine example of 19th‑century Umbertine style, Palazzo San Giorgio is a central monument of Molise and an unmissable stop when visiting the historic center.
