History and description
Built between the 13th and 14th centuries by merging three medieval buildings, the palace—constructed in travertine—was originally the seat of the deputies of the artisan classes. Later, it hosted the Capitano del Popolo, a magistrate figure from which it takes its name. After suffering damage during a noble revolt, it was restored and given a main portal dedicated to Pope Paul III, as well as a courtyard with superimposed loggias designed by Camillo Merli. From 1563 it became the seat of the Papal Governors, before passing into the hands of the Municipality in 1920. During the Fascist period, it housed the National Fascist Party, and today it serves as the headquarters of the Department of Culture. Inside, the building features the Sala della Ragione, the Sala degli Stemmi, and a Roman archaeological area.
Curiosities
Among the many curiosities linked to the Sala della Ragione are tales of the spirit of a young man executed there and rediscovered frescoes. The palace also inspired several travelers, who described it as one of the most beautiful in Italy.
