Paestum Smart: technology serving cultural heritage
On 20 May 2026 an integrated system was activated at Paestum to strengthen protection, security and visitor services within the archaeological area. The project merges digital infrastructure, advanced surveillance and accessibility solutions designed to blend with the landscape.
Key components of the system
- Surveillance: panoramic and motorized cameras with infrared night vision and 360° Speed Dome units with optical zoom.
- Network and control: a widespread LAN and a central control room connected via fiber optic for real-time monitoring.
- Emergency intercoms: two-way devices for assistance and immediate alerts.
- Visitor analytics: flow mapping and predictive analysis tools to improve site management.
- Live streaming and interpretation: cameras and displays set up for broadcasting events and enriching on-site storytelling.
"Smart islands" and contextual design
A signature feature is the installation of thirteen smart islands, conceived as small tech hubs that connect services with the archaeological landscape. Built with materials and a minimalist aesthetic to limit visual intrusion, they include equipped poles, benches with charging points, planters and, where planned, stainless steel information screens.
Privacy, sustainability and management
The initiative includes technical safeguards for data protection and privacy, using encryption and retention policies compliant with current regulations. The aim is a lightweight digital infrastructure that balances heritage protection, visitor assistance and landscape respect, supporting more efficient and sustainable site management.
Benefits for visitors and conservation
- Improved site oversight and emergency response.
- Enhanced visitor reception through multimedia and live content.
- Continuous monitoring to support conservation activities.
- Reduced visual impact through integrated design solutions.
The project can serve as a reference for other archaeological sites seeking to adopt advanced technologies for protection and enhancement of cultural assets.
