The Ostia Archaeological Park has rolled out new multimedia totems and digital displays to expand visitor access to archaeological areas and the Museum of Roman Ships. The initiative is part of the S.T.Ar.T Ostia project (Technological Solutions for Archaeology and the Territory) and focuses on improving accessibility, interpretation and site management.
The totems provide videos and virtual tours accessible via touchscreens and QR codes. The project integrates 2D and 3D reconstructions, photogrammetric surveys and laser scanning to deliver virtual access to spaces normally closed to the public. An immersive reality experience is scheduled soon at the "Fornici" area in the Ostia Antica excavations.
The measures support better conservation and site management, enrich the visitor offer and widen audience reach, including users who cannot physically access all areas. Digital content is designed for both on-site enhancement and remote access.
Practical note: the project was officially presented at the Museum of Roman Ships in Fiumicino on April 10, 2026; installations are either active or being progressively activated.
