History and description
A key monument of Etruscan civilization, the Monterozzi Necropolis is located on a hill of about 130 hectares, its name deriving from the tumuli scattered across the area. Rediscovered between the 19th and 20th centuries, it is one of the most fascinating archaeological sites in Italy, with around 6,000 hypogeal tombs decorated with frescoes depicting funeral banquets, mythological figures, and dances. Among the most famous are the Tomb of the Leopards and the Tomb of the Lionesses. Blending myth and history, the site was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004.
Curiosities
The frescoed tombs were a privilege reserved for the local aristocracy, but throughout the complex the central theme remains the idea of life continuing after death.
Access
Open from Tuesday to Sunday, the necropolis can be visited at the cost of €6, with reductions available and free entry on the first Sunday of the month and on specific occasions.
How to reach it
Located on a provincial road about 7 kilometers from Tarquinia, the site can be reached by car via the A12 motorway, or by bus or taxi.
Walking through and visiting the Monterozzi Necropolis means immersing yourself in a place rich in culture, history, and myth—an experience that fully reveals the legacy of ancient Rome.
