“Markato” launched: cross-border project to promote traditional crafts between Basilicata, Puglia and Greece

An initiative bringing together Italian and Greek institutions to preserve and make traditional craft skills competitive amid globalization and changing consumption patterns.

  • Duration: May 2025 - May 2027 (24 months).
  • Budget: €1.1 million.
  • Geographical scope: Achaia, Zakynthos and Metsovo (Greece); Bari, Matera and Bisceglie (Italy).
  • Lead and partners: Chamber of Commerce of Achaia; Chamber of Commerce of Zakynthos; Municipality of Metsovo; Associazione Distretto Produttivo Puglia Creativa; Fondazione Matera Basilicata 2019; Municipality of Bisceglie.
  • Main activities: mapping traditional trades, needs analysis, workshops, cross-border exchanges and training in innovation, digital marketing and sustainability.
  • Target audience: professionals, students and enthusiasts engaged in safeguarding and transmitting craft skills.

Presented in Matera, the project aims to go beyond memory preservation by creating economic opportunities through digital archives, online marketplaces and integration with cultural and experiential tourism.

Rita Orlando, director of Fondazione Matera Basilicata 2019, emphasized the strategic value of the Italy–Greece axis to make craftsmanship competitive in contemporary markets and to broaden protection of traditional trades.
