Mining Park Museum of the Aosta Valley: A Journey into the Heart of the Cogne Mine

Autore: Redazione 18/09/2025 15:41

The Mining Park Museum of the Aosta Valley and the Cogne Mine offers an immersive experience that brings to life the history and hardships of the miners who, for centuries, worked deep within the mountains of the Aosta Valley. It is not a simple museum but a true journey through industrial archaeology and technological innovation.

The Cogne Mine: A Landmark of Valdostan History

The Cogne mines, particularly those of magnetite, were among the most important in Europe. Their origins likely date back to ancient times, but they reached their peak in the 20th century, employing hundreds of workers before closing definitively in 1979. Today, this extraordinary industrial heritage has been restored and enhanced to tell the story of an era that profoundly shaped the economy and society of the Aosta Valley.

The Visitor Experience: Between Exhibits and Underground Galleries

The visit is divided into two complementary parts, offering a complete picture of life in the mines:

  1. The Exhibition Center:
Located in Cogne, within the historic Villaggio Minatori (Miners’ Village), this modern museum space uses multimedia technologies, touchscreens, and video projections to introduce visitors to the history of mining throughout the Aosta Valley. Through interactive displays, visitors can explore the five main sites of the Mining Park (Cogne, Brusson, Saint-Marcel, Ollomont, and La Thuile) and listen to the stories and voices of the miners themselves.
  2. The Costa del Pino Gallery:
This is the highlight of the experience. After a scenic drive to the Costa del Pino mining site at about 2,030 meters above sea level, visitors board an authentic miners’ train. The small train travels 1.5 kilometers inside the mountain, taking guests into the very heart of the mine. The tour continues on foot through tunnels, crushing rooms, and workspaces that still contain the original tools and machinery, offering a raw and authentic glimpse into the miners’ world.
