National Museum of the Duchy of Spoleto: A Journey into the Middle Ages at the Albornoz Fortress

Autore: Redazione 21/09/2025 10:59

The National Museum of the Duchy of Spoleto is a historic institution housed within the majestic Rocca Albornoziana, the fortress that dominates the city skyline. More than a mere repository of artworks, the museum serves as a storyteller, guiding visitors through the millennia-long history of the Duchy of Spoleto — a major political entity founded by the Lombards in the Middle Ages.

The History of a Duchy and Its Art

The exhibition unfolds within the fortress itself, offering visitors a fully immersive journey into the history of the region. The collection focuses mainly on archaeological finds, sculptures, and paintings that illustrate the life and art of the Duchy, with special attention to the period between the 4th and 15th centuries.

Among the highlights on display:

  • Archaeological artifacts that testify to the presence and influence of the Lombards in the region.
  • Sculptures and frescoes from local churches and abbeys, documenting the evolution of Umbrian art and its fusion with Lombard and Byzantine traditions.
  • Manuscripts and liturgical objects that offer insight into the Duchy’s deep religious and cultural life.

The museum does more than simply exhibit objects — it places them within their historical, social, and artistic context, providing a complete picture of a pivotal era in the history of central Italy.
