International Bell Museum: the sound of history in Agnone

Autore: Redazione 10/09/2025 14:43

In Agnone, a charming village in the heart of Molise, lies a truly unique place: the International Bell Museum and its adjoining Pontifical Marinelli Foundry. This is not just a museum, but a sensory and historical experience that unites culture, art, and an ancient craft passed down through generations for nearly a thousand years.

The Marinelli Foundry: a thousand-year-old excellence

The Marinelli Foundry, managed by the same family for centuries, is one of the oldest operating foundries in the world. Its history, documented as far back as the 14th century, is a source of pride for all of Italy. Over the centuries, the foundry has produced bells for churches around the world — including those of the Vatican and the Jubilee celebrations. It has been honored with the title of “Pontifical”, a recognition of its unparalleled craftsmanship and artistic mastery.

The Museum: the art of bell-making

Located within the foundry, the museum offers a fascinating journey through the process of creating a bell from start to finish. Among the exhibits, visitors can admire:

  • Models and molds: illustrating the intricate techniques of lost-wax bronze casting.
  • Historical documents and vintage photographs: recounting the Marinelli family’s legacy and their relationships with great figures of the past.
  • A collection of ancient bells: showcasing the evolution of their shape, decorations, and tone over the centuries.

The guided tour: a unique experience

What makes this museum truly special is the opportunity to combine the exhibition visit with a guided tour of the foundry itself. It’s an authentic journey into the past, where visitors can watch the artisans at work, observe the tools and furnaces, and — with a bit of luck — witness the dramatic moment of casting, when molten metal is poured into the molds. The tour ends with the resonant sound of a bell, a magical moment that bridges past and present.
