Diffuse Forest Museum: an open-air art trail in the Castelli Romani woods

The Diffuse Forest Museum has been launched in Rocca di Papa within the Castelli Romani Regional Park. The outdoor trail winds through the Monte Cavo area and the ancient via Sacra, showcasing art installations integrated into the woodland.

Highlights

  • Flora: a nearly 4-metre-tall spruce sculpture, about 2 metres wide, depicting a female figure that embodies respect for nature.
  • Giant wooden binoculars placed on a panoramic overlook to frame the surrounding landscape.
  • Corten-steel animal silhouettes (squirrel, dormouse, marten, viper, owl, peregrine falcon) hidden among the branches.
  • The Gardens of Wonders - Air and Oxygen: artworks that imagine paradisiacal gardens of the future.

Visiting hours

The trail is open on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from 09:00 to 18:30, until 25 October 2026. Check for updates before you go, especially in case of unfavorable weather.

How to get there & practical tips

  • Location: Monte Cavo / via Sacra, Rocca di Papa, Castelli Romani Regional Park — a short drive from Rome.
  • Clothing: light hiking shoes, layered clothing and a windproof jacket; the trail runs through uneven woodland terrain.
  • Bring: water, sun protection and a map or GPS-enabled device; mobile reception may be limited in parts of the route.
  • Facilities: you can finish the walk with a meal at the Baita di Monte Cavo, close to the loggia.
  • Etiquette: respect the artworks and the natural environment; do not leave litter and keep dogs on a leash.
