From March 20 to April 19 the Museo d’Arte Orientale Edoardo Chiossone in Genoa hosts the exhibition Museum of Japanese Tales, featuring ceramic works by Tokuko Tajima. Born from a diploma project at the Accademia Ligustica di Belle Arti, the show explores the relationship between Japanese folktales and the museum’s holdings.
Curated by Jacopo Marchioretto and Sabrina Marzagalli, the installation places contemporary creations alongside a selection of works drawn from the Chiossone’s reserves, chosen in collaboration with the museum’s curators. The layout fosters an immersive experience that highlights visual and narrative connections between historical pieces and modern practice.
Each artwork is paired with a QR code providing access to an audio guide with in-depth texts, offering visitors contextual keys to the stories and cultural references that inspired the artist.
Tokuko Tajima, originally from Osaka and based in Genoa, transitioned from painting studies at the Accademia Ligustica to a ceramic-focused practice that draws heavily on Japanese cultural references. Alongside her art, she produces cultural content that helps bridge traditional and contemporary perspectives.
The exhibition reaffirms the historic link between the Accademia Ligustica and the Chiossone collection, enhancing the educational role of the museum and providing fresh inspiration for emerging artists. It is a recommended visit for those interested in the intersections of Japanese tradition and contemporary art practice.
