Museum of the Cathedral Works (MODO): A Treasure of Art and Faith in Orvieto

Autore: Redazione 21/09/2025 11:04

The Museum of the Cathedral Works (MODO) of Orvieto is not housed in a single building but is instead an exhibition route that unfolds through several palaces and churches surrounding the Cathedral. Its goal is to preserve and enhance the artistic and historical heritage connected to the construction and life of one of Italy’s most celebrated cathedrals. The museum offers an experience that goes beyond the simple admiration of masterpieces, allowing visitors to grasp the deep spirituality and artistic fervor that have shaped the city over the centuries.

A Journey Through Masterpieces and History

MODO extends across several sites, each narrating a different chapter in the history of the Cathedral and the city:

  • Papal Palaces: The main collection is displayed here, featuring paintings, sculptures, manuscripts, and liturgical objects of great value. Among the highlights are works by Luca Signorelli, who painted the frescoes in the Chapel of San Brizio, and Arnolfo di Cambio.
  • Church of Sant’Agostino: Houses sacred artworks, including the wooden sculpture of the Crucifix of Santa Maria Nuova.
  • Other Spaces: The museum also includes buildings such as Palazzo Soliano, offering a comprehensive view of the heritage preserved by the Opera del Duomo.

The exhibition is enriched with multimedia installations and informative panels that explain the historical context, artistic techniques, and significance of the displayed works.
