The Saxophone Museum in Fiumicino has added a historic instrument to its collection: a Selmer Super Action tenor sax from the personal archive of musician Gianni Basso. Marked with serial number 45332 and dated 1951, the saxophone is an important piece of Italy's jazz heritage.
The acquisition goes beyond a technical addition: the saxophone is closely tied to Gianni Basso's artistic identity and illustrates, through its physical presence, the development of the jazz language in Italy during the post-war era. The Super Action model is a milestone in Selmer's evolution, linking mid-century manufacturing and sound aesthetics to later instrument generations.
The purchase was supported by the Region of Lazio as part of the 2025 Annual Plan, underscoring institutional efforts to protect and promote local musical heritage. The museum, led by Attilio Berni, has been recognized as a cultural institute of local relevance.
The sax is shown with a technical sheet and contextual materials that trace Gianni Basso's career, helping visitors understand the instrument's role in his music and in Italian jazz history. The exhibit situates the sax within the broader development of Selmer instruments.
