Museum of the Karst and Mountaineering: a Journey into the Heart of the Earth and the Mountains

Autore: Redazione 18/09/2025 09:34

In Borgo Grotta Gigante, in the municipality of Sgonico, just a few kilometers from Trieste, stands a place that celebrates a truly unique territory: the Museum of the Karst and Mountaineering. This museum goes beyond a single theme — it unites the geological and speleological history of the Karst plateau with the epic feats of mountaineering, weaving a fascinating story that links the depths of the earth to the peaks of the mountains.

Managed by the Eugenio Boegan Caving Commission, one of Italy’s oldest and most prestigious speleological associations, the museum is ideally located for visitors wishing to explore the nearby Grotta Gigante, the largest tourist cave in the world.

Exploring the History of Speleology and Mountaineering

The museum’s exhibition offers a rich and varied experience, divided into several themed sections:

  • Karst Geology: this area is dedicated to the geological formation of the Karst plateau, explaining karst phenomena, the creation of caves and sinkholes, and the characteristics of the limestone rocks that make up the region’s subsoil.
  • Speleology: the most extensive section focuses on the exploration of the underground world, displaying tools, ropes, lamps, and maps that illustrate the exploits of the earliest cavers — a tribute to the courage and passion of those who dared to descend into the earth’s depths.
  • The Great War on the Karst: this section highlights the strategic role of the Karst region during World War I, with artifacts, testimonies, and documents that recount the battles fought in this harsh and rugged landscape.
  • Mountaineering: dedicated to the spirit of climbing and exploration, this section exhibits equipment and stories of expeditions that shaped the history of mountaineering in the region and beyond.
