In the heart of Campobasso stands a one-of-a-kind museum — the Museum of the Mysteries. This is not just an exhibition space, but an institution that carefully preserves the beating heart of local folklore: the “Ingegni” (machines) and costumes of the centuries-old Procession of the Mysteries of Campobasso, held every year on the feast of Corpus Christi. Far from being a dusty old museum, it is a living workshop, a repository of traditions, and a space of preparation for the great annual event.
What are the “Mysteries”?
The Mysteries are complex allegorical structures created in the 18th century by the artist Paolo Saverio Di Zinno. Each ingegno is an iron scenic machine that forms a living tableau, depicting a saint or a biblical scene. The most fascinating feature of these Mysteries are the “volanti” — children, and sometimes adults, who are attached to the structures in such a way that they appear to be suspended in the air, creating a spectacular and emotionally powerful effect. Their preparation takes months, and the museum is the place where these machines are assembled and kept in perfect condition.
A visit to the museum
Visiting the Museum of the Mysteries is a moving experience. The atmosphere recalls that of a workshop, where visitors can admire the eleven original Ingegni and understand their intricate engineering. The guides — often members of the families who have carried on this tradition for generations — explain the meaning of each Mystery and share anecdotes and curiosities from its long history. In addition to the Ingegni, visitors can see costumes, footwear, photographs, and videos from past processions, capturing the unique spirit of a tradition that has endured for nearly three centuries.
Visitor Information
For a complete and unforgettable experience, the best time to visit is during the Procession of the Mysteries, held in Campobasso on Corpus Christi Sunday. On that day, the Ingegni leave their “home” and parade through the streets, turning the museum into a living tradition.
