National Archaeological Museum “Vito Capialbi”: a journey through the history of Vibo Valentia

Autore: Redazione 27/08/2025 10:13

In the heart of Vibo Valentia, in a commanding position overlooking the city and the Gulf of Sant’Eufemia, stands the impressive Norman-Swabian Castle. Inside this majestic fortress lies the National Archaeological Museum “Vito Capialbi”, a cultural institution of great importance for anyone wishing to explore the deep roots of this land. The museum, named after the renowned local archaeologist and historian, is a true treasure chest that tells the story of the city since the time of the ancient colony of Magna Graecia known as Hipponion.

History within a castle

A visit to the museum offers a unique experience, as it combines the history of the artifacts with that of the building that houses them. The Norman-Swabian Castle, with its thick walls and imposing architecture, is itself an extraordinary monument bearing witness to the various dominations that shaped the destiny of Vibo Valentia. Walking through the museum’s halls inside this ancient fortress creates an evocative atmosphere and allows visitors to feel the tangible continuity of history in this place.

The collections: from Hipponion to Vibona

The museum’s collections are the result of decades of archaeological excavations carried out in the territory of Vibo Valentia and its surroundings. The exhibition itinerary is a true journey through time, covering a vast chronological span:

  • Prehistory: the visit begins with artifacts that testify to prehistoric settlements in the area, with stone and ceramic tools dating back thousands of years.
  • The Age of Hipponion: the heart of the museum is dedicated to the city’s Magna Graecia period, between the 7th and 3rd centuries BC. Here, visitors can admire finds from necropolises and settlements, including the famous Funerary Set of Tomb 11, an exceptional collection of burial objects belonging to a young woman, featuring gold and silver jewelry and a rich selection of painted vases. This funerary set is a masterpiece of Greek art and craftsmanship.
  • The Roman Era: the final sections of the museum document the city’s transformation under Roman rule, when its name was changed to Vibona. Amphorae, coins, and sculptures illustrate everyday life, trade, and the cultural influences of the time.

Thus, the “Vito Capialbi” Museum is not merely a place that displays objects; it contextualizes them, offering a complete and captivating narrative of the history of an entire region.
