National Archaeological Museum “Giorgio Asproni”: A Journey into the Heart of Barbagia

Autore: Redazione 28/08/2025 09:39

The National Archaeological Museum “Giorgio Asproni” in Nuoro is a key cultural institution that tells the millennia-old story of the Nuoro area—from its most ancient origins to the Roman era. This museum is a must-visit destination for anyone wishing to understand the deep roots of central Sardinia, a region rich in history, traditions, and mystery.

The History of a Museum Dedicated to a Man of Culture

The museum is named after Giorgio Asproni (1806–1876), an important figure in Sardinian history—a politician, patriot, and scholar who devoted much of his life to promoting the island’s cultural heritage. His life represents the enduring bond between the history and identity of this territory.

Founded to collect and showcase the numerous archaeological finds discovered throughout the Nuoro area, the museum offers a scientifically rigorous yet captivating journey that guides visitors through the civilizations that once inhabited the region.

The Collections: A Story That Begins in the Distant Past

The exhibition is organized into sections that cover a vast chronological span, offering a comprehensive overview of the evolution of local civilizations.

  • Prehistory: the first rooms are dedicated to prehistory, featuring artifacts that testify to early human settlements dating back to the Neolithic (6th millennium BC) and Chalcolithic periods. Visitors can admire obsidian tools and ceramics that reveal the beginnings of an agro-pastoral society.
  • Nuragic Civilization: the heart of the museum is undoubtedly the section devoted to the Nuragic Civilization (ca. 1600–730 BC), the most fascinating and mysterious era in Sardinian history. Here are displayed artifacts unearthed from nuraghi and villages across Barbagia and the Nuoro area. Among the most remarkable pieces are the bronzetti votivi—small yet incredibly detailed bronze sculptures depicting warriors, archers, priests, animals, and female figures. These bronzes are not only artistic masterpieces but also precious testimonies that provide a unique insight into the religion, society, and daily life of the Nuragic people.
  • Roman Era: the exhibition concludes with a section dedicated to the Roman period, documenting the gradual Romanization of the Nuoro region. This section features coins, amphorae, ceramics, and domestic objects that illustrate the community’s life under Roman rule and its integration into the imperial system.
