The National Archaeological Museum of Manfredonia is a cornerstone for understanding the history and archaeology of the Gargano area. Its location inside the impressive and well-preserved Swabian-Angevin Castle, which once defended the harbor, creates a truly unique atmosphere — blending the medieval charm of a fortress with the richness of ancient artifacts. It is not merely a place to admire objects, but a journey through the key stages of an entire region’s past, from the Neolithic period to the modern age.
The Castle: a fortress with a glorious past
Before even entering the museum halls, the castle itself tells a fascinating story. Commissioned by Frederick II of Swabia in the 13th century and later completed by the Angevins, this imposing stronghold played a vital defensive role. Its solid walls, corner towers, and moat are enduring examples of medieval military architecture. Today, its courtyards and walkways not only offer spectacular views over the Gulf of Manfredonia, but also provide a magnificent setting for the museum’s remarkable collection.
The Collections: the world of the Daunian Steles
The beating heart of the museum is the Hall of the Daunian Steles. Here, hundreds of limestone slabs, carved between the 8th and 6th centuries BC, are displayed — a collection that stands as a unique example of European funerary art. Far removed from Greek or Roman artistic canons, these steles represent a pure and original expression of the Daunian people. They depict, in a stylized and symbolic way, warriors with weapons, women adorned with elaborate jewelry, and scenes of daily and mythological life. Each stele is a visual narrative — a stone book revealing the beliefs, customs, and worldview of an ancient civilization.
Beyond the steles, the exhibition includes other important archaeological finds:
