The National Archaeological Museum of Cagliari is the most important archaeological museum in Sardinia and one of the most prestigious in Italy.
Located in the historic Castello district, within the Cittadella dei Musei, it serves as a key destination for anyone wishing to explore the island’s ancient and millennia-old past, from prehistory to the Roman and medieval eras.
With its vast and meticulously curated collections, the museum offers a fascinating journey through time, recounting the evolution of Sardinia’s civilizations — from the mysterious Nuragic culture to the flourishing Phoenician, Punic, and Roman periods.
The Giants of Mont’e Prama
One of the museum’s most extraordinary exhibits, this hall houses the monumental stone sculptures of the Nuragic civilization, discovered near Cabras.
These colossal warriors, archers, and boxers, dating back to the 9th–8th centuries BCE, are among the most significant archaeological finds in the Mediterranean. Their stylized forms and imposing presence make this section an unmissable experience for visitors.
Nuragic Bronzes (Bronzetti)
This remarkable collection of bronze votive statuettes portrays warriors, chiefs, priests, animals, and miniature models of nuraghi (megalithic towers).
Together, they provide a vivid insight into the daily life, beliefs, and artistic sophistication of the Nuragic people — one of Sardinia’s most enigmatic civilizations.
Punic and Roman Artifacts
The museum also preserves a rich array of finds from the Phoenician, Punic, and Roman eras: sarcophagi, mosaics, pottery, and sculptures that highlight Sardinia’s role as a cultural and commercial crossroads of the Mediterranean.
The museum’s modern layout combines archaeological treasures with educational panels and multimedia installations, making the visit engaging and accessible to all.
Every section unveils a different layer of Sardinia’s history, revealing how its people interacted with nature, religion, and trade over the centuries.
