The Civic Museums of Treviso are not housed in a single building but form a unified network that preserves and promotes the city’s vast artistic and archaeological heritage. This museum system takes visitors on a journey from the earliest human settlements in the region to the masterpieces of modern art, offering a deep understanding of the history and identity of Treviso.
A Journey Through History and Art
At the heart of the Civic Museums is the Santa Caterina Complex, one of the main sites. This former convent, beautifully restored, hosts a fascinating itinerary that unfolds through several sections:
- Archaeological Section: The artifacts on display trace the history of the Treviso area from prehistoric times to the Roman era, with a special focus on the ancient Paleovenetian civilization, one of the most significant in early Italian history.
- Picture Gallery (Pinacoteca): The gallery showcases an impressive collection of Venetian painting, spanning from the Middle Ages to the 18th century. Among the highlights are works by Titian, Cima da Conegliano, and Il Pordenone, testifying to the vibrant artistic life of Treviso and its region.
- Chapter Room Frescoes: One of the jewels of the complex is the Chapter Room, adorned with a 15th-century fresco cycle depicting the Stories of Saint Ursula, painted by Tomaso da Modena.
Beyond Santa Caterina, the Treviso Civic Museum network includes several other important sites:
- Casa da Noal: This 15th-century historic residence houses the modern art collection, featuring paintings, sculptures, and drawings by 20th-century artists, including Arturo Martini.
- Luigi Bailo Museum: Dedicated to modern and contemporary art, this museum displays Italian and international works from the 20th century, offering a dialogue between local creativity and global trends.
- Provincial Ethnographic Museum “Piero Bellini Delle Stelle”: Located in Cison di Valmarino, outside the city center, it tells the story of rural traditions and daily life in the Treviso area.
