History and description
Built between 1561 and 1588 by the Republic of Venice, which ruled Bergamo at the time, the walls extend for over six kilometers as a defensive stronghold. Entirely made of local stone, they feature one hundred cannon openings, two platforms, and four monumental gates, among which Porta San Giacomo stands out, offering visitors a truly breathtaking panorama.
Curiosities
Today a much-admired landscape, the walls—though designed for military purposes—were never subjected to any siege. In fact, the cannons were used only for celebratory salvos and never for real battles.
Access
The walls can be visited every day at any time, free of charge, through walks suitable for all ages. At night, they are often illuminated, creating a romantic atmosphere.
How to reach them
Surrounding Bergamo’s Upper Town (Città Alta), the walls can be reached by train from Milan or from Bergamo station toward Porta San Giacomo, or by funicular after parking in the Lower Town.
Chosen as the perfect spot to admire the city from above, the Venetian Walls are an unmissable stop on any Bergamo itinerary, combining history with stunning views.
