Walls of Sassari – one of the most fascinating symbols of the city’s past

Autore: Redazione 02/10/2025 10:54

History and Description

Built starting in the 13th century, the walls of Sassari were commissioned by the growing urban community which, in the heart of the Middle Ages, needed protection from external threats. They followed a pentagonal route over two kilometers long, enclosing and defending the city’s original nucleus, which had developed around the Church of San Nicola. The walls were constructed using local limestone and reinforced with 36 towers, mostly square in shape, featuring battlements and arrow slits. The only exception was the striking Turondola, a circular tower that still survives today in the city center. Access to the city was controlled by four main gates—Gurusele, Sant’Antonio, Capu de Villa, and Utzeri—each connected to the main communication routes. Over the centuries, the walls were restored several times, particularly in the 18th century under the House of Savoy. However, starting in the mid-19th century, urban expansion and new architectural needs led to their gradual demolition. Today, only a few sections remain, visible along Corso Trinità, Via Torre Tonda, and Piazza Sant’Antonio.

Curiosities

The Turondola, the only surviving round tower, is one of the most fascinating symbols of the city’s ancient fortifications. According to some sources, the wall once displayed carved coats of arms representing the alliance between Sassari and the Republic of Genoa, signed in 1294. In recent years, archaeological excavations in the courtyard of the University of Sassari have uncovered new wall sections, offering a fresh glimpse into the city’s medieval past.

Access Information

The surviving sections of the walls are outdoors and can be freely accessed year-round.

Directions

The walls are located in the historic center of Sassari and can be easily reached on foot.
