The Ministry of Culture has designated the exhibition "From Picasso to Van Gogh. Stories of painting from abstraction to impressionism", curated by Marco Goldin at the Museo Civico di Santa Caterina in Treviso, as "of significant cultural interest".
Acclaimed by the public, the show offers an original, non-chronological narrative that moves from mid-20th-century American abstraction back to the great masters of impressionism and post-impressionism. More than sixty works are on display, many of them making their first appearance in Italy, all on loan from the Toledo Museum of Art (USA).
The layout highlights relationships between different artistic languages and traditions, putting artists such as Richard Diebenkorn, Mondrian, Albers, Morandi, Braque, Matisse, Bonnard, De Chirico, Modigliani, Picasso, Manet, Degas, Renoir, Gauguin, Cézanne and Van Gogh into dialogue. The final section, focused on impressionist and post-impressionist landscapes, features several major works including a Van Gogh painted during the last week of his life, presented as the culmination of the exhibition.
Near the closing of the exhibition, an evening preview event is scheduled featuring the curator's theatrical project dedicated to Monet; the show will tour across Italy starting in October, with piano accompaniment.
The exhibition offers a valuable opportunity to explore continuities and ruptures in painting between the 19th and 20th centuries, appealing both to general audiences and to specialists.
