History and description
Inaugurated in 1880 on the anniversary of the decoration of the city’s flag, the monument was created in marble and bronze by sculptor Augusto Benvenuti. It depicts Victor Emmanuel II, in military uniform, placing his helmet on a fragment inscribed with the initials S.P.Q.R.. Below, a female figure—personification of the city—holds the civic coat of arms and the municipal flag decorated for military valor.
Curiosities
Framed by tall trees and surrounded by numerous buildings, the monument is part of a sculptural cycle that also includes the statues of Garibaldi and Zannella.
Access
As it is located outdoors in the city center, the monument is freely accessible at any time.
How to reach it
Situated in the historic center of Vicenza, the sculpture can be reached by car (parking in the city center), by train or bus to the central station, and then on foot with a walk of about 15 minutes.
More than just a significant work of art, the monument allows the public to come into direct contact with the history of a united Italy.
