Monumenti Aperti marks 30 years: Umbria among the stops in a national program

In 2026 Monumenti Aperti celebrates thirty years of activity. The initiative has grown from a local idea into a nationwide practice that opens historic buildings, palaces and monuments to the public through guided visits, stories and community events designed to bring heritage closer to people.

Highlights of the 2026 edition

The program involves hundreds of historic sites across the country: more than 800 locations across 18 regions, with numerous municipalities and communities participating. The calendar runs from spring into autumn, offering recurring opportunities to explore places often off the usual tourist routes.

Umbria and Perugia

Perugia and other Umbrian towns will open both modest and major heritage sites—religious buildings, medieval corners and hidden treasures—making them accessible through free guided visits led by local volunteers and expert guides. These openings aim to turn monuments into spaces for community interaction, shared memory and active citizenship.

Main activities and features

  • Accessible Culture (Cultura senza Barriere): inclusive routes, dedicated services and the involvement of people with disabilities as volunteer guides; mapping of accessibility levels;
  • Monuments in Music & Performance: artistic and musical events involving schools and local groups;
  • Hands-on workshops and emotional activities for children and families to encourage experiential learning;
  • Free guided tours and local storytelling led by volunteers, students and associations.

Civic engagement and historical data

The project is rooted in voluntary work and community participation: over the years it has attracted millions of guided visits and the involvement of thousands of students and volunteers, opening up thousands of monuments and reinforcing heritage’s social value.

Organization, recognition and slogan

Coordinated by a cultural association working closely with institutions and communities, Monumenti Aperti has received national and international recognition for its contribution to education and heritage awareness. For its 30th anniversary the program highlights a collective message: "Generazione Monumenti Aperti. A heritage of culture, ties, memory".

Visitor information

Openings and guided visits are generally free. For full schedules, site lists and participation details consult the official Monumenti Aperti website. Activities are designed to be inclusive and to accommodate diverse audiences, with dedicated paths and information services.

Visitor tip: always check the local program before visiting, as opening times and access rules may vary by site and conservation requirements.
