Montesperello Castle rises atop Monte Penna, at an altitude of 338 meters, offering a strategic vantage point over the Caina Valley and Lake Trasimeno. The area shows traces of Etruscan settlements, including carved funerary urns, suggesting ancient use of the land, likely for burial purposes.
The site was frequented by the Etruscans between the 3rd and 2nd centuries BCE, as evidenced by urns embedded in the castle walls. After the Roman conquest, Montesperello became a rural settlement, with farms scattered across the surrounding fields. Its strategic location remained important during barbarian and Lombard invasions.
In 608, Bernardo Montesperelli founded the villa that would later become the castle. In the 10th century, Otto III donated the area to the Abbey of Campoleone. Between the 14th and 15th centuries, the castle was the site of numerous conflicts, including raids and destruction ordered by the priors of Perugia and the papal army. The Montesperelli family consistently played a central role in defending and managing the territory.
During the Renaissance, the Montesperelli family became patrons of the arts, transforming the castle into a cultural center that hosted artists, writers, and musicians. New wings were added, and Renaissance architectural elements were introduced.
Between the 17th and 19th centuries, the castle suffered damage from wars and natural disasters, but was always restored. Today, it is a private property, available for events and weddings. The structure retains its circular walls, with a pedestrian entrance on the east side and a vehicle-accessible route on the opposite side. Beneath the castle, escape tunnels lead outside the walls.
The castle features circular fortifications, a central well, underground tunnels, and modern residences integrated into the historic structure. Nearby, the Church of San Cristoforo, built between the 14th and 15th centuries, houses works by local artists and frescoes by Futurist painter Gerardo Dottori.

Private property: Access is primarily available by reservation for events, weddings, or guided tours
