History and description
Designed starting in 1863 by the Jewish Community with the aim of building a synagogue, the Mole was erected by Alessandro Antonelli until 1889, when the Winged Genius and the five-pointed star were added. These were later destroyed by various calamities and rebuilt with reinforcements in the mid-20th century. Standing at about 167.5 meters, the Mole is one of the tallest buildings in Europe, characterized by a neoclassical square base, a two-level colonnade, and a dome stabilized by an invisible inner shell.
Curiosities
Nietzsche described it as the most ingenious architectural work ever created. It was also one of the first structures to be illuminated by gas. Of particular importance are the star at the top—today with 12 points inspired by Platonic solids—and its spire, which, according to legend, acts as an esoteric antenna and is considered a forbidden place for students before graduation.
Access
Open from Wednesday to Sunday and visitable by reservation, the Mole can be accessed with tickets starting from €16, varying depending on entry to the National Cinema Museum, with specific reductions available.
How to reach it
The Mole can be reached by car, with nearby underground parking available, by tram (lines 13 and 15), by bus (lines 55, 56, 61), by metro (M1), or on foot from the city center.
A true symbol of Turin, also depicted on coins, the Mole Antonelliana is the perfect combination of history, legend, and breathtaking views. An absolutely unmissable visit!
