Memoria e Oblio: Umberto Albanese’s exhibition at MUST Lecce

Opening: Saturday, April 11, 2026, at 6:00 PM. Venue: Museo Storico – MUST, Lecce. Exhibition period: April 11–21, 2026. Hours: 9:00 AM–8:00 PM (closed on Monday).

The show features approximately 50 paintings produced mainly over the last three years, together with 6 works by Valentina Albanese. The selection explores time and memory through a non-figurative language, juxtaposing persistent recollections with faded traces of the past.

  • Works on display: 50 paintings + 6 works by Valentina Albanese
  • Media: paper supports, acrylic, collage, and material impastos
  • Main themes: memory, oblivion, the passage of time

The artist favors paper for its atemporal quality and tactile properties: different fiber structures absorb color and light in varied ways, allowing subtle chromatic effects difficult to achieve on canvas. Thick layers of material leave grooves, folds and imperfections that become part of the composition, producing unexpected yet harmonious textures.

The exhibition requires a contemplative approach: the works reveal their layers and evocative details only through careful observation and quiet reflection.

Brief biography: Umberto Albanese was born in Casarano in 1950. Trained as a physician with a specialization in cardiology at the University of Pavia, he has pursued a parallel career in painting. From the 1990s his work moved toward greater informality, with exhibitions in Italy and abroad, including Geneva and Seoul, and participation in the 54th Venice Biennale in 2011. His works are held in public and private collections and have been shown in international fairs and solo shows.
