MAV – Museum of Aosta Valley Handicrafts: A Treasure of Tradition and Creativity in Fénis

Autore: Redazione 29/08/2025 08:29

The MAV – Museum of Aosta Valley Handicrafts in Fénis is a true celebration of Valdostan identity, a cultural institution that honors the history, creativity, and craftsmanship of local artisans. It is not merely an exhibition space but a living center dedicated to documenting, preserving, and promoting the traditions that have shaped the life and culture of this Alpine region.

The Story of a Craft and Its Setting

The MAV is housed in a charming historic building just a few steps from the famous Castle of Fénis, creating a cultural journey that links the power and history of aristocracy with the knowledge and ingenuity of common people. Local craftsmanship is an expression of the creativity and resilience of a population that learned to shape wood, iron, and stone into objects that are not only useful but also beautiful. The museum pays homage to this tradition, which finds its highest expression in the Fiera di Sant’Orso, the thousand-year-old fair that fills the streets of Aosta each year and is extensively documented within the museum.

The Collections: Wood, Iron, Textiles, and Ancient Rituals

The exhibition unfolds through several themed rooms that showcase the richness and variety of Aosta Valley craftsmanship, offering a comprehensive view of the techniques, materials, and meanings behind each creation.

  • Wood Sculpture and Carving: Wood is the cornerstone of local craftwork. The museum displays a vast range of objects—from religious and secular sculptures of great artistic value to everyday items such as toys, farm tools, and intricately carved furniture. The MAV is the ideal place to discover the history and use of the “grolla” and the “copa dell’amicizia”, the traditional carved wooden cups symbolizing Valdostan hospitality and conviviality, often used for sharing coffee à la valdôtaine among friends.
  • Iron, Soapstone, and Other Materials: Another section is devoted to wrought ironwork, featuring tools and decorative pieces that highlight the skill of local blacksmiths. Soapstone, a soft, easily carved rock, was traditionally used for making pots and utensils thanks to its heat-resistant properties.
  • Weaving, Lace, and Costumes: The museum also explores the art of weaving, showcasing wool and hemp fabrics used to create clothing, blankets, and lace. A special focus is given to traditional costumes and embroidery, which reflect the history, identity, and social status of different Aosta Valley communities.

A Living Museum: Education and Promotion

The MAV is not a static institution but a vibrant hub of creativity actively engaged in passing down artisanal knowledge. Through workshops, demonstrations, and educational programs, the museum connects visitors—especially younger generations—with traditional crafting processes, emphasizing the value of manual skills and cultural heritage. Its mission is to train new generations of artisans and keep alive a tradition that forms the beating heart of Valdostan culture.
