History and description
Commissioned by the emperor in 28 BC after the Battle of Actium, the mausoleum—featuring a central entrance, a cylindrical travertine structure, a statue of Augustus himself, and the Res Gestae recounting his deeds—was designed, inspired by the tomb of Alexander the Great, as a large circular tumulus about 87 meters in diameter, meant to represent the power of the dynasty. Inside, emperors from Augustus to Nerva were buried. Over time, the monument underwent several transformations, becoming a castle, a vineyard, a theater, and finally a concert hall.
Curiosities
Although the mausoleum was commissioned by Augustus, the first person to be buried there was actually his beloved nephew, Marcus Claudius Marcellus.
Access
Due to ongoing redevelopment works in the surrounding square, the mausoleum is currently closed to visitors.
How to reach it
Located in the Campo Marzio district, the mausoleum is easily reachable by metro, with stops at Piazza di Spagna or Flaminio, or by a pleasant walk on foot.
As the burial place of Rome’s first emperor, the Mausoleum of Augustus is a site that embodies the very importance of the Eternal City, making it an unmissable destination for history enthusiasts!
