Nuova Galleria Morone presents "Things As They Are", a solo exhibition by Mathew McWilliams curated by Roberto Lacarbonara. The Canadian artist stages a contemporary investigation into Antiveduto Gramatica’s Concerto a quattro figure (1608–1610), examining pictorial space, composition and the mediation of images.

McWilliams combines painting, photography and inkjet printing: he isolates structural lines in the seventeenth‑century work, translates them into separate planes on two identical canvases, then photographs and prints each canvas onto the other. The process produces complementary surfaces that retain mutual memory, questioning originality, copy and manipulation while probing how images are mediated today.

The project links formal aspects (perspective, gestures, composition) with tonal and chromatic choices, maintaining the narrative and emotional qualities of the baroque painting and generating a critical dialogue about object-image relations.

  • Artist: Mathew McWilliams (Vancouver, 1973)
  • Curator: Roberto Lacarbonara
  • Reference work: Concerto a quattro figure, Antiveduto Gramatica (1608–1610)
  • Genres: contemporary art, solo exhibition

Why visit: the show offers a metalinguistic reading of painting that merges classical techniques and digital processes, relevant for anyone interested in how painting adapts to contemporary reproduction and authenticity debates.

Brief bios:

  • Mathew McWilliams — based in Paris; works across painting and photography with a minimalist, conceptual approach. His practice investigates the intersection of pictorial media and reproduction processes.
  • Antiveduto Gramatica — Roman painter (1571–1626) active between the late 16th and early 17th centuries, known for idealized portraits and influences from Caravaggio and the Bolognese school.
