Massa Martana, in the province of Perugia, is a strong example of local resilience: badly hit by the 1997 earthquake, the village was rebuilt with attention to detail, resulting in a well-preserved historic centre. Walking its streets reveals Roman and medieval layers visible in the architecture and city walls.
The village developed along the ancient via Flaminia. The defensive walls with bastions and gateways are immediately noticeable, featuring coats of arms and inscriptions. The village sits on a promontory shaped like an amphitheatre, offering wide views over the Umbrian hills.
A defining feature is the pink stone, a sedimentary rock whose warm hue comes from iron oxides. Traditionally worked by local stonemasons, it has been used for finishes and decorations and gives the village its characteristic warm tones that blend with the surrounding greenery.
Massa Martana is perfect for slow, authentic tourism. Between vineyards, olive groves and rolling hills you can plan bike rides, sunset walks and wine or food tastings nearby.
Massa Martana combines history, architecture and landscape in a compact, walkable village. The quality of restorations, the presence of artworks and the cultural identity linked to the pink stone make it appealing both to art lovers and to visitors seeking tranquillity and local flavours.
