On 13 April 2026 at Vinitaly in Verona, the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV), government delegations and wine sector representatives revived a proposal to include wine culture among UNESCO-recognised heritages. The aim is to treat wine as an expression of cultural landscapes, traditional practices and local identity, beyond its economic value.
Italy hosts many UNESCO sites that include cultural landscapes where viticulture is central to territorial identity. A specific recognition of wine culture could strengthen protection and management in these areas:
The initiative launched at Vinitaly will require technical steps and official nominations. To track progress, watch for regional and national calls, official statements from responsible authorities and the dossiers related to any candidature.
