History and description
Built in 1279 as a royal residence by order of Charles I of Anjou, the castle was originally designed in Gothic style. It was later renovated by Alfonso I of Aragon, who added several Renaissance elements and the marble entrance gate, transforming it into a cultural and political center. Over the centuries, it also came under the control of the Spanish viceroys and the Bourbons, before undergoing numerous restorations that gave it its current appearance. Externally, the building has a trapezoidal layout with five cylindrical towers and an Honor Gate, while inside it houses the Sala dei Baroni, the Palatine Chapel, and the Civic Museum.
Curiosities
The monument is particularly linked to two legends: one claims it is haunted by the ghost of Queen Joanna I of Anjou, while another tells of a giant crocodile that once lived in its moat.
