Christie’s is presenting a series of Italian previews for selected Mario Schifano works that will be offered at the Paris sale on April 15. The events allow collectors and the public to examine the paintings in person, learn the estimates and understand their artistic significance.
Highlighted works include View Beyond the Hudson River (To Anita Pallenberg), Gigli d’acqua (1964), estimated at approximately €200,000–300,000, and an important Untitled (1963), estimated at about €120,000–180,000. The latter has been absent from the market for nearly two decades and comes from a notable private collection.
The previews also include other significant lots in the sale, such as a large-scale work by Scarpitta titled South Turn (1962), with an estimated range of €400,000–600,000.
From an art-historical perspective, View Beyond the Hudson River dates to Schifano’s critical New York period (1963–1964), when he developed a visual language that transformed direct representation into a filtered memory. The dedication to Anita Pallenberg adds an intimate biographical layer, reflecting personal tensions that resonate in the work.
The Paris evening sale is scheduled for 15 April. The Italian previews are a practical chance to assess condition, scale and provenance—essential information for bidders and anyone researching Schifano and 1960s art.
