M9 Contemporaneo: a new platform for contemporary art at M9

M9 – Museo del ’900 in Venice Mestre introduces M9 Contemporaneo, a project identity dedicated to contemporary artistic expressions. Rather than a single exhibition room, it functions as a museum-wide platform designed to host shows and initiatives that connect the memory of the twentieth century with current issues.

The inaugural programme, on view from 13 March to 12 April 2026, presents two complementary exhibition paths across different museum spaces, focusing on science, landscape and territorial change.

Exhibitions on display

Michelangelo Penso – Invisible Resonances

Presented in the M9 Orizzonti hall (first floor), the solo show by the Venetian artist blends scientific research with sensory experience. Curated by Leo Lecci and produced in collaboration with Galleria Alberta Pane, the installation works bring normally hidden phenomena into perceptible form.

• Cronòtopo: an installation inspired by the four-dimensional concept of spacetime, reacting to visitors through sensors that trigger sound and LED lighting.
• Magnetic Nanoparticles Genesis: created with the Italian Institute of Technology, this piece translates research on magnetic nanoparticles into a multisensory environment.
• Sirtuine: a large sculptural structure representing DNA repair processes, previously shown at international venues.

Into the Land – The calm unease of the territory

In the M9 Passaggi area (second-floor corridor) the Into the Land project presents a photographic selection that investigates contemporary landscape change in the Veneto region. Born in 2016, the platform brings together photographers, writers, architects and journalists to document territorial transformations.

• Interdisciplinary project addressing the relationship between territory, communities and change.
• Exhibition developed with support from the Venice Order of Architects and collaboration with architect Alessandro Angeli.

Visitor notes

M9 Contemporaneo aims to reinforce the museum’s vocation of interpreting the past to read the present, offering visitors occasions to engage with scientific, environmental and social themes through contemporary art. The exhibitions combine documentary and poetic approaches to landscape and the invisible phenomena explored by art and science.
